Tooms Lake

The Tooms Lake is an artificial lake in the east of the Australian state of Tasmania. The small village on its west bank of the same name.

The shallow lake covers an area of 6.6 km ² and has a water content of 25.362 million m³. The catchment area is 60.2 km ². The Tooms River leaves the lake at its northwest end. The lake water has an electrical conductivity of 74 ĩS / cm (measured at the outlet ).

Lake and village are accessible by unpaved Tooms Lake Road. Several times a year to land seaplanes on the lake.

Fishing

The lake is used for fishing. There you can catch brown trout and rainbow trout. The brown trout were used in the 1904 Tooms Lake, the Rainbow Trout 1908 Trout weigh on average 1-1 ½ kg.; the largest weighed 2 ½ kg.

Furthermore you can find galaxies ( galaxy maculatus ) in the lake.

Facilities

On Tooms Lake, a campground and a slipway for boats have been created. There are also public toilets and waste-paper baskets. There are no shops or public phones.

History

On December 6, 1828 there was a massacre of Tasmanian Aborigines were killed in the ten natives of nine soldiers of the 40th Regiment. Jon Danvers, the leader of the group, reported to the police magistrate of Oatlands:

One of them getting up from a small fire to a large one, Discovered us and gave the alarm to the rest, and the whole of them jumpt (sic) up immediately and attempted to take up Their spears in defense, and seeing that, we immediately fired and repeated it Because We saw theywere on the defensive part, theywere about twenty in Number of splat and several were killed, two only were, unfortunately taken alive. (Translation:. . " One of them, who stood by a small campfire and walked over to a larger, spotted us and alerted the rest of the group all immediately jumped on and tried their spears to attack in defense as we saw it, we fired immediately and also shot on, because we saw that they wanted to defend themselves and there were about 20 in number, and killed several of them were only two were captured unfortunately alive ")..

A woman and a boy were arrested; the rest of the group fled.

The small dam at the outlet of the lake was built by 40 men.
