Topeiros

The settlement Topeiros first mentioned in the 1st century BC. It is located on the eastern Nestos knees near a bridge crossing the river at the present site Paradisos, on the western frontier Greek Thrace. The founding of a Roman city was connected with the construction of the Via Egnatia, after which the ruins of a rest-house ( mansio ) indicating the river crossing. West of the ruined city rises the Lekani Mountains, at this point the northern limit of Thasitischen Peraea. Under the Roman emperor Justinian I the city was re- attached as an important control on the Via Egnatia. The later ruling here Palaiologues have expanded the base. Remains of a Middle Byzantine church and stone tombs from the time are north of the city ruins.
