Toplița

Topliţa ( ungar Maroshévíz, German Toeplitz ) is a town in Harghita county in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical location

The city is located 37 km north of Gheorgheni, in the midst of the Eastern Carpathians, on the upper reaches of the river Mureş. Topliţa located at the intersection of National Road 12 ( Topliţa - Sfântu Gheorghe ) with the National Road 15, which leads over the 1105 m high pass Carpathians Piatra Neamţ and Borsec Borsec after. It also is also on the railway line from Târgu Mureş by Gheorgheni. Due to its mountainous environment, the city is visited by many tourists.

History

In ancient times, the Dacian settlement Sangidava here was probably (according to Ptolemy ). The city was mentioned in the modern era in 1658, at that time it belonged to the Principality of Transylvania. As part of Transylvania, the city was from the end of the 17th century the Habsburg monarchy. After the First World War, the city came to Romania. As a result of the Second Vienna Award of 1940 was again for four years to Hungary, since 1944 back to Romania.

Population

In 2002, it had 15,880 inhabitants, of which 11,291 ( 71.1 %) Romanians, 4,039 (25.4% ) Hungary ( Székely ) and 486 (3.1%) Roma. It is the fourth largest city in Harghita County, where the largest city with a Romanian majority.
