Topola

Topola (Serbian Cyrillic - Топола ) is a Serbian town in the region Šumadija, 80 km south of Belgrade and 40 km north of Kragujevac. Topola is the seat of the eponymous county, to an area of 356 km ² 27,579 people, mainly Serbs (98%) inhabit.

History

Topola is for the history of Serbia is of great importance because it was the capital of the insurgent Serbia 1804-1813. The leader of the First Serbian Uprising, Karađorđe Petrović, founded Topola, 1781. Located on a hill in Topola, the Oplenac, St. George's church is of white marble. It was donated by Peter I, King of Serbia and in it rests almost all of the noble family of the Serbian and later Yugoslav duke and royal family Karadzordzevic ( Karadjordjević Croatian, Serbian Карађорђевић ). All the kings, except the last Yugoslav king Peter II found their final resting place here. Peter's son, Crown Prince Alexander, strives to be superimposed on the body of his father after Topola, which was originally supposed to happen in 2008. Similarly, the mortal remains of Queen Mary, Queen Alexandra and Prince Regent Paul and his wife Olga are to be brought back from abroad. During the communist era in Yugoslavia were not allowed to bury members of the royal family in Topola, therefore rest their bodies in Windsor, Tatoi and Lausanne.
