The Torfmoorsee is an approximately 24 -acre, former quarry in the area of ​​the North Rhine- Westphalian city Hörstel. He is surrounded by the 57 acre recreational area peat bog.

History

The lake was created between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and owes its existence to the construction of the section of the A30 between Rheine and Ibbenbüren. The dredged sand was used for the construction of the highway and there was a 800 m long and 600 m wide lake with a depth of up to 20 m.

In 1985, an approximately one -acre bay with a sandy beach and sunbathing area was built in the course of the further expansion of the recreation area. With the exception of a fish spawning area swimming is permitted in the remaining part of the lake.

The lake is also home to a local sailing community, organized through regional surfing and sailing championships regularly on it. Another sporting event on Torfmoorsee is since 1985 every year taking place triathlon.
