Torgny Lindgren

Torgny Lindgren ( pronunciation: [ ˌ tɔɹ ː ː gny lin dgɹe ː n], born June 16, 1938 in Raggsjö, Västerbotten ) is a Swedish writer.

He makes his debut as a poet in 1965 with " Plåtsax, Hjärtats instrument". In 1970 he published the collection of poems " Dikter från Vimmerby ". His breakthrough as one of the most successful authors of Sweden, however, he reached with his novels. Torgny Lindgren is a member of the Swedish Academy.

Life

Torgny Lindgren was born as the son of Andreas Lindgren and Helga Björk. Here he grew up in a multigenerational family.

Lindgren's narrative is shaped by the landscape in which he grew up, and by the stories told his grandmother in his childhood. In addition, he reflected later: " She told incessantly and slow, while the whole family sat around them. Nothing could stop them, to fill the long, dark winter evenings with biblical stories and anecdotes from her life and that of the ancestors ... The oral traditions with which I grew up, have influenced me. " Lindgren left early on his home and moved to North Swedish Småland, where he worked as a teacher. Beginning of the 1970s he joined the Social Democratic Party of Sweden, where he engaged critically. In 1971, his involvement with the Swedish Social Democrats " Hur skulle det vara om one vore Olof Palme? " (German: ". Herein How to be Olof Palme would ) he paid tribute to the Swedish Prime Minister as a" last significant preacher ".

In the following years he wrote a series of satires on issues of politics and education. They appeared in the collection " Skolbagateller medan jag försökte skriva till mina överordnade ". His first novel " Övriga frågor " ( German: " Some other transactions") was published in 1973, two years later, in 1975 followed by " Halls" ( German: " The Hall " ), both novels have been critical of the growing gap between leadership and base apart within the Swedish social democracy. Then it was silent for some time around him. He planned, he announced at that time, a longer realistic novel. His first big success came indeed with " Ormens väg på hälleberget ", German: " The way of the serpent ( on the rocks ) " a, 1982. In this book he returned mentally Västerbotten back to where he had spent his childhood. The novel deals with the repression of the rural population in northern Sweden the 19th century.

With " Ormens väg på hälleberget " was created by the author at the same time the unique, artificial Lindgrensche language of his later novels: economical, clear, direct, unrestrained, yes, the novel speaks a language untamed, is full of allusions dialect, full of macabre humor and biblical references. " Ormens väg på hälleberget " was filmed by Bo Widerberg.

Torgny Lindgren's collection of short stories " Merabs skönhet " ( " Merabs beauty " ) is considered by many critics, including the author himself, as his masterpiece.

Around 1980, he converted to Catholicism.

The historical trade he went in 1984 with the novel Bathsheba (Bat Seba ), which focuses on the biblical story of Bathsheba and King David. With this book, he was very well known in Germany. ( " Bethsabée " french) 1986 donated by the magazine Femina " Le Prix Femina Etranger " for the best foreign novel in France, the novel received.

Torgny Lindgren published in consequence numerous novels and story books. He is one of the foremost writers in Sweden and is a member of the Swedish Academy since 1991.
