Toritto

Toritto is a Southeast Italian municipality ( comune ) with 8577 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia. The community is located about 21 kilometers southwest of Bari in the Murgia. A portion of the community also belongs accordingly to the existing since 2004 Parco nazionale dell'Alta Murgia.

History

Probably already populated in the times of the Hellenic colonization, the first document of the existence Torittos testifies in 1069th

Economy and Transport

The area is dominated agriculturally. In particular, almonds and olives are grown here. Passing through the municipality, the former Strada Statale 96 Barese, which is now downgraded to provincial road. In the village there is also a railway station on the non-electrified narrow-gauge track (950 mm) from Bari about Matera to Montalbano Jonico.
