Torres Novas [ toʁɯʃ nɔvɐʃ ] is a city in Portugal. The historical name of the region was Lisboa e Vale do Tejo.
History
Here was a small Roman town in the province of Lusitania. Thus, a villa was excavated with the Vila Cardilium here.
The present town was built during the Christian conquest of the Moors, the Reconquest. Portugal's first king, D. Afonso Henriques conquered the territory for the first time 1148. According to an Arab reconquest King D. Sancho I. took the final area for Portugal in possession, populated the new place, and gave him in 1190 the first city rights. In later periods were twice royal council meetings ( Cortes ) convened here. The first took place in 1438, for counseling after the death of King D. Duarte, and a second time in 1535 to negotiate the marriage contract between Emperor Charles V and the Portuguese princess Isabel.
In the course of Miguelistenkrieges met in 1834 civil war parties of the Liberals and the absolutist Miguelisten in Torres Novas each other.
On August 14, 1985, the former town ( Vila ) Torres Novas to the city ( Cidade ) was charged.
