Torsten Schmitz

Torsten Schmitz ( born August 26, 1964 in Crivitz ) is a German boxing trainer and former amateur boxer.

Amateur career

Torsten Schmitz began in 1974 with the boxes. As an amateur Schmitz graduated 250 fights with 215 victories. In 1982 he became European Junior Champion in Schwerin. At the World Championships in 1986 in Reno and 1991 in Sydney, he took a third place, respectively, in Moscow in 1989, he finished second. At the European Championships, he was less successful, most other athletes were nominated in his weight class. 1985 in Budapest, he was eliminated in the second round of the tournament, in his second European Championships in Gothenburg in 1991, he reached the second place.

In 1988 Schmitz for East Germany at the Olympic Games in Seoul in part, left there, however, in the second round against the South Korean Park Si -hun from there was another victim of numerous miscarriages of justice that favored the home boxer. Park eventually won in the final fight against Roy Jones Jr. very controversial gold medal. Participation in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona Schmitz was denied because it was nominated in his weight class Markus Beyer.

GDR Champion Schmitz was three-time welterweight from 1983 to 1985, and 1987 and 1989 in the light middleweight. He also won four times at the Chemistry Cup. In 1990 he occupied at the Goodwill Games in second place, he defeated Chris Byrd there and Alexander Lebsiak, but lost the final against Israel Akopkochjan from the Soviet Union. In 1991 he won the German championship. In the spring of 1993, he finished his career after a serious knee injury.

Coaching career

1993 Schmitz finished his studies at the Leipzig DHfK with the completion of a qualified sports teacher. As of August 1996, he worked as a coach at Universum Box-Promotion. The supervised by him boxers included, among other things, Bert Schenk, Regina Halmich, Michel Trabant and Luan Krasniqi. With the retirement of Regina Halmich in November 2007 Schmitz lost his job at the Hamburger Universe boxing stable and eventually took freelancing care of SES - boxer Robert Stieglitz, with whom he 22 August 2009 the WBO title at super middleweight against the universe - boxer Károly Balzsay won. Since October 2010 he works for the boxing stable of the promoter Wilfried Sauerland in Berlin.
