Tortoreto

Tortoreto is a municipality with 10.770 inhabitants and is located near Alba Adriatica and Giulianova in the Italian province of Teramo. Traffic Technically, the community is well connected to the Strada Statale 16 Adriatica A14 and the European route 55. Tortoreto has received the Blue Flag for the cleanliness of the beach and the good quality of sea water.

Geography

Among the districts ( fractions) are Tortoreto Alta, Tortoreto, Cavatassi, Salino and Terra Bianca.

Borders the following municipalities: Alba Adriatica, Corropoli, Giulianova, Mosciano Sant'Angelo and Sant'Omero.

The municipality is situated approximately 43 km from the capital of the province, the city of Teramo and 4 km from the Adriatic coast. The district is Salino were flowing from the river Salinello.

History

In the two communities Corropoli and Tortoreto area has several remains of villages and huts were discovered during excavations of the Bronze Age. In Roman times the settlement Castrum Salina was built. In the Middle Ages numerous churches were built in the area. In the 16th century the village was under Spanish rule, and later the Kingdom of Naples took over the estate in possession. In 1800, during Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Italy and much of Europe, even Tortoreto fell into French hands. The French plundered the church, damaged churches and stole important works of art and documents. During the Second World War Tortoreto and the train station were almost completely destroyed in Tortoreto. In 1956, the community was divided and Alba Adriatica, which previously belonged to Tortoreto spun off into a separate municipality.

Economy

The economy of Tortoreto in summer is highly dependent on tourism. The obvious Adriatic coast is a popular seaside resort. Important factors for the local economy are also coastal fishing, the commercial area in the center, the furniture and metal factories, hotels and restaurants.
