Tory Channel

Geographical location

The Tory Channel is a sunken valley and one of the Marlborough Sounds in the north of the South Island of New Zealand.

The Sound was named after the " Tory ", a ship that took 1840 British settlers to Wellington, named. It is located south of Arapawa Iceland and separates the island from the mainland. At its west end of the Tory Channel is connected to the larger Queen Charlotte Sound, he meets approximately half the length. At the east end of the duct opens into the Cook Strait.

The ferry route of the " Interislander " between Wellington on the North Island and Picton passes through the Tory Channel.

Erosion, which is attributed to the ferries (especially new fast ferries that no longer run now ), has led to speed restrictions.

One of two candidates for the easternmost point of the South Island (near Cape Campbell) is located at the entrance to Tory Channel, he called Westhead.
