Tosyl

As a tosyl group of covalently bound residue is called CH3 -C6H4 - SO2 - p- toluenesulfonic acid in the organic chemistry. This group is found in the p- toluenesulfonic acid, p- Toluolsulfonsäurehalogeniden (eg tosyl ), p- toluenesulfonic ( tosylate ), p- Toluolsulfonsäureamiden ( Toluolsulfonamide ) and the p- Toluolsulfonsäurehydraziden. Your name is derived from its systematic name p- toluenesulfonyl. The tosyl group is abbreviated as " Ts ", rare and contrary to the IUPAC recommendations with " Tos ". The Nosylgruppe and Brosylgruppe are structurally related to the tosyl group.

The tosyl group may not be confused with the tosylates, the esters or salts of p-toluenesulfonic acid is.

According to IUPAC, the term refers tosyl ... only on the para- substituted compound. For this reason, not p- Ts or p- Tos are to be used as a shortcut formula.

Properties

The electron-withdrawing effect tosyl group, and therefore the underlying p-toluenesulfonic acid is a strong acid and the tosylate group is a good leaving group. This can be readily cleaved by suitable nucleophiles under substitution of the molecule. For this reason Tosylverbindungen are very reactive and have a limited life. This can be enhanced by storage in the absence of nucleophiles, such as water or alcohols.
