Total Music Meeting

The Total Music Meeting was an annual, multi-day international artists festival for improvised music in Berlin. It was founded in 1968 as a counterpart to the Festival, led by Joachim -Ernst Berendt Berlin Jazz Festival.

The aim of this alternative event it was first to show the developments of contemporary, free jazz in Europe. In addition to evening concerts with international artists now thematic workshops and documentary matinees take place. The claim to break musical boundaries and conventions as possible and to realize the experience of improvisation in music at a high level, is already reflected in the festival name Total Music Meeting.

The performances combine partially the different disciplinary arts. 1979 ranging from the Feminist Improvising Group, to the appearance of the group TTT, which tends to perceive on special occasions tonality and painting as two sides of the same emotional momentum worldwide and in the example, AR Penck, Markus Liipertz, Louis Moholo, Jeanne Lee or Peter Kowald appeared together.

The interactive communication between sound and space is at the forefront of contemporary improvisation since 2001 also represented " new music " compositions and performances, which also electronic game concepts play a role. Some of these have been created on behalf of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

The traditional world music is occasionally represented at the Total Music Meeting, when their representatives (or exceptional musician ) open according to improvise out. South African or Iranian musicians were here just to hear how the native of Tuva overtone singer Sainkho Namtchylak.

During the festival could be expected to subsidize the Berlin Senate in the early decades, it has to rely increasingly on private donations since 2000. It is funded via the sale of original graphics, for example, by Han Bennink, Fritze Margull, Helge Leiberg or Urs Jaeggi. After the Senate set for 2009, only a grant of 3,760 euros in view, the festival was canceled in 2009.
