The stadium PAOK (official name ), or Toumba Stadium, is a football stadium in Thessaloniki. The Toumba Stadium is located in the 4th district of the city, in the homonymous district of Toumba, near the city center. It is the third largest football stadium in Greece, but the biggest exploiting dividend privately owned stadium in the country and the largest in the city. The football team PAOK Thessaloniki keeps their home games here.

History

In 1957 the site was acquired for 1,500,000 Greek drachmas. The construction was started in the spring of 1958. In September 1959, the stadium was not yet complete ( it lacked the South Stand ), but still willing to participate in the newly founded Greek league - with turf and a capacity of 14,000 spectators.

Since then it has been extended again and again, so that the original capacity of 20,000 finally increased in the years to 33,000, and in the 70 years to 45,000. The still existing attendance record dates back to 1976, when 45 252 spectators the game PAOK - AEK looked. The expansion of the stadium including additional, important for the club, sports facilities, such as the gymnasium under the North Stand, the track around the pitch and floodlights.

1998 were all standing in converted seating, resulting in a reduction in the capacity to 32,000 seats to a row. The current number of seats from 28,701 reached the stadium as 2000 once renovations were made to the stadium, mainly because an increase in the safety zones was aimed at.

Due to the consideration of the city of Thessaloniki for the Olympic football tournaments in the 2004 Summer Olympics modernization measures were adopted. During the Games, the stadium acted as a training venue. Construction began in the summer of 2003 and lasted one year. In addition to a new roof for the grandstand and new seats, a new turf was laid. Addition was behind the grandstand (blocks 1 and 2), a new four-storey building complex, which towers over the stadium at its height and its top floor boxes are housed. In building new rooms for VIP and media were created.

The stadium is owned by the sports club PAOK, and for years there is been working on a new building on the same site. The difficult financial situation of the club not yet made ​​the implementation of such plans, however.
