Tour of Somerville

The Tour of Somerville (TOS ) is a cycling criterion, which is held annually on Memorial Day in Bridgewater, New Jersey, discharged. The TOS is the oldest existing bicycle race in the United States.

For the first time the race was held in 1940, in the first decades only for amateurs. Originally it was to take place in Somerville a few kilometers away, which proved to be impossible because it is crossed by a State Highway and it is forbidden to organize on such a cycle race. It was initiated by the former racing cyclist and bicycle dealer Fred Kugler from Somerville, whose son Furman Kugler won the first two sweeps and his friend Carl Anderson the third. Both cyclists fell in World War II; for the memory of them will broadcast the race the addition Kugler -Anderson Memorial Tour.

Today, the race is called the character of a popular festival and The Kentucky Derby of Cycling; it results in a 1.3 -mile round through the center of Bridgewater a total of about 50 miles. The festivities go on throughout the weekend to race in the elite men on Monday. Since 1976 the race under the name Mildred Kugler Women's Open will be held for women.

1993 Tour of Somerville was awarded the special honor of the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame.
