Tournay, Hautes-Pyrénées

Tournay is a commune in the Hautes -Pyrénées, in the Midi -Pyrenees. It is located in Tarbes district and is the capital of the Canton of Tournay.

Geography

Tournay has 1323 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) to 14.32 square kilometers and is located about 14 km east-southeast of Tarbes in the previous county Astarac on Arros. Through the municipal area leads the Autoroute A64 (junction 14 - Tournay ). The train station of Tournay lies on the railway line Toulouse- Bayonne.

History

Whether the name of the place from a Aquitanian tribe ( Tornaten ) is derived, is unclear. Tournay was built as a Bastide in 1307 by the Seneschal Bohemond d' Astarac. In the Huguenot wars Tournay was destroyed. 1632 there was a plague epidemic. From 1951 to 1958, the Benedictine Abbey of Notre- Dame de Tournai was built in a loop of the river Arros.

Attractions

At sacral buildings, the Benedictine abbey and the church of Saint- Étienne is emphasized.

Community partnerships

Tournay maintains an internal French partnership with the municipality of La Vraie -Croix in the department of Morbihan.
