Tournoi de France
The Tournoi de France (French for Tournament of France) was a swept in France in June 1997 football tournament. The competition served to prepare for the 1998 World Cup (for future World Cup tournaments this function was taken over by the FIFA Confederations Cup ) and was held in Paris and other French cities. It was attended by four teams: Brazil, England, Italy and France as host.
It was played in the Round Robin system, so that each of the four teams played three games. The winner was finally England against Brazil, France and Italy.
Highlights of the tournament were the hard-fought 3-3 draw between the Italian and the Brazilian selection, as well as the free kick from Roberto Carlos in the 1-1 draw in the opening game between France and Brazil, as the ball is in an exceptional trajectory to the French defensive wall turned and landed in the right corner of the net. Alessandro Del Piero was with three top scorer of the tournament, Romário scored twice.
