Töv Province

The Töw Aimag (Mongolian Төв Аймаг, Central Aimag ) is a Aimag ( province ) in Mongolia.

The capital Ulaanbaatar is individually managed as an enclave within this aimags.

Geography

The Aimag covers the western part of the Khentii Mountains, the mountains around the capital, as well as the south and west areas of predominantly hilly steppe. The main watercourse is the Tuul Gol, which flows through Ulaanbaatar and opens later in the Orkhon.

Population

The Töw Aimag is mainly occupied by Khalka Mongols, but there are also small groups of ethnic Kazakhs and Barga.

Traffic

The central transport hub is located in the enclave of Ulaanbaatar, which houses the largest railway station of the Trans-Mongolian Railway and the Chinggis Khaan International Airport. A small airfield with a dirt runway is also available in the aimag capital Dsuunmod.

Culture

Mandsushir Chiid near Zuunmod in Bogdkhaan Uul National Park. It was founded in 1733 and housed 20 temples and 300 monks. Most of it was destroyed in 1932 by the communists. The last temple was restored after the democratization and now contains a small museum.

In the region there is an equestrian statue of Genghis Khan, the currently the highest equestrian statue in the world with a height of around 40 meters (as of 2011).

National Parks

The Gorchi - Tereldsch National Park was established in 1993. It includes part of the Khentii Mountains. In particular he is known for his sometimes spectacular rock formations, including a rock that looks like a giant turtle from the right perspective. The landscape is alpine character, with larch and pine forests, gushing mountain streams and a very wide range of flora and fauna.

In Chustain Nuruu National Park about 120 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, the original wild horses Takhi ( Przewalski's horse) Mongolia were exposed again in 1993. The project is very successful and the animals have become an attraction for both scientists and tourists.

The mountain Bogd Khan Uul south of Ulaanbaatar has been regarded as a protected area in 1778, as it was considered sacred. Under socialism, he was raised formally to the National Park. This urban sprawl was prevented rings around the capital in the south.
