Town Hall, Kaunas

The Town Hall of Kaunas ( lit. Kauno rotušė ) is located in the former capital of Lithuania Kaunas and is one of three historically preserved town halls in Lithuania (the others are the Town Hall and the Town Hall Vilnius Kėdainiai ). The Town Hall is located on the historic town square in the old town of Kaunas. The city hall tower is 53 meters high. The City Council is due to its high, white figure colloquially called "White Swan " and today only as a registry office ( "Wedding Palace " ) are used.

History

In 1542 began the construction of the new city hall in the Gothic style, after the previous building was completely destroyed by fire. 1562 could be completed and the building had only one floor, without a tower, but with cellars. During the years 1771 to 1780 the town hall was reconstructed again, as it had been destroyed once again by fire.

In the 19th century, the town hall was used for various purposes, such as the premises of the Russian Orthodox Church, an ammunition dump and the Russian theaters were housed here. In the years 1869 to 1944 was located in the building of the city administration.

In the early 1970s there was a further restoration of the old building. The last renovation of the Town Hall was made ​​in 2005. The facade and clock tower were renewed and replaced windows and doors.
