Towns County, Georgia
The Towns County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hiawassee.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme north of Georgia, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 446 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Rabun County, Habersham County, White County and Union County.
History
Towns County was formed on March 6, 1856 117 County Georgia from portions of Union County and Rabun County. It was named for George Washington Bonaparte Towns, a governor of Georgia.

According to the census of 2000, there were at Towns County 9,319 people in 3,998 households and 2,826 families. The population density was 22 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.80 percent White, 0.00 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.0 percent residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.18 percent from other races groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.72 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,998 households out of which 20.8 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers and 29.3 percent were non-families. 26.0 percent of all households and 13.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.61 persons.
16.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 to 24, 20.5 percent between 25 and 44, 28.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 25.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,950, and the median income for a family $ 37,295. Males had a median income of $ 28,657, women $ 21,813. The per capita income was $ 18,221. 8.8 percent of families and 11.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
