Tōyō kanji

The Toyo Kanji (Japanese当 用 汉字, dt " kanji for everyday use " ) are the first recommended by the government Kanji. They include 1850 characters and established by the Japanese Ministry of Education on November 16, 1946.

The Toyo Kanji were replaced in 1981 by the Jōyō Kanji that contain 1945 characters. Until then, the Toyo Kanji along with the Kana formed the basis of the Japanese writing system. For schools, a fixed curriculum was created. With the introduction of some Toyo Kanji characters were simplified in order to facilitate the learning and to make the characters more recognizable. So was shortened keizai ( economy ) of经济after経 済. These characters are called simplified Shinjitai.
