The Toyota Sports 800 was Toyota's first manufactured in standard sports cars.

History

The prototype, called Toyota Publica Sports was first shown at the 1962 Tokyo Auto Show. To get started, he had a roof as can be slid out of the space age, as a drive, he was equipped with the 28 hp ( 24 kW ) engine of Publication 700. In Japan, the Sports 800 often called the " Yota - Hachi " (short for German: Toyota 8 ) refers.

1965 started mass production with the type designation up15 and a ³ 800 cm drilled two-cylinder boxer engine Toyota - U with two carburetors. The power increased to 45 hp (33 kW) at 5,400 min -1. This engine was enough to move the only 580 kg heavy car in the city with a consumption of 6.3 l/100 km and accelerate up to 160 km / hr.

Shozo Sato, a designer of Datsun, and Toyota engineer Tatsuo Hasegawa were responsible for the aerodynamic styling of the vehicle. Hasegawa was in World War II aircraft engineer, and so the sport a lightweight and agile vehicle was 800.

The Sports 800 was one of the first production cars with targa top, ahead of the Porsche Targa. The Targa roof made of aluminum could be stowed in the trunk when it was not needed.

Between 1965 and 1969 approximately 3131 units were built by the Kanto Auto Works. Only about 10 % of these vehicles have survived until today, most of them in Japan.

1235 cars were produced in 1965, 703 pieces in 1966, 538 copies in 1967, 440 Sports 800 in 1968 and 215 units in 1969.

The vast majority of the 3131 cars were right hand drive, but about 300 pieces were left-hand drive, but were shipped mainly to Okinawa, which was occupied by the United States and was therefore right transport. A very small number of LHD Toyota used for testing in the United States; but then they decided not to export the Sports 800 in the United States.

Over the years, there were subtle differences in the models. These were: In 1967, the first transition was synchronized, 1968 grille and bumper were changed and in 1969 there were side marker lights. The styling of the bodywork remained unchanged.

A two-cylinder boxer engine with 790 cc displacement drove the car. The Toyota 2U engine delivered 45 bhp (33 kW) at 5400 min -1 and was manufactured from 1965 to 1969, his similar successor 2U -B from 1966 until 1976. That the bus Dyna Coaster 1975 produced manual shows that Toyota is the 2U -B motor started as an auxiliary motor for the air conditioning. The 2U engine was installed in Publica UP20 / UP26 and UP100 MiniAce.

The weight of the car has been kept low in the self-supporting body by the use of thin aluminum sheets and steel sheets. In the first years of production were even the seat frames made of aluminum. The empty weight was 580 kg.

For this model, there is the Internet registry both in Japan and in the U.S., in which the owner to enter.
