Trace gas

Trace gases are gases that make up in the air, especially the Earth's atmosphere, only a tiny proportion. Many trace gases are harmful to the environment, others wear their high reactivity significantly to the production of hydroxyl radicals in, which in turn can act as a " detergent " of the atmosphere. Trace gases are especially involved in the greenhouse effect. Reactive halogen compounds can significantly contribute to ozone depletion, for example, even in low concentrations of a few ppt, both in the troposphere as well - like the ozone hole - in the stratosphere. Some trace gases, such as ozone, various meanings come in different heights. For a list of all trace gases, including their concentrations see air.

Trace gases in the atmosphere can be measured by ion mobility spectrometers, infrared spectroscopy or differential optical absorption spectroscopy even in extremely low concentrations, among others.
