Trachealis muscle

The trachealis muscle ( dt: trachea muscle ') is a muscular structure of the rear wall of the windpipe (trachea ) in mammals.

The Musculus trachealis bridged together with the connective tissue is not supported by the cartilage rings of the trachea of the tracheal wall ( paries membranaceus ). When predators it is the cartilage rings outside, and most other mammals inside of. The trachealis muscle is innervated by the vagus nerve or its recurrent laryngeal nerve.

The trachealis muscle consists of smooth muscle. His tone ensures that the cartilage rings are closed in vivo. Only with the death and thus the relaxation of the muscle of the paries membranaceus is clear.
