Traditional healers of South Africa

The Sangoma is the name for a South African medicine man. He plays a central role in the medical care of the traditional Nguni cultures ( Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele and Swazi ). His treatment is based not only on the knowledge of medicinal herbs, he also operates clairvoyance and advises his patients. A survey by the Pietermaritzburg Institute of Natural Resources found that 84 % of the South African population consult at least three times a year Sangoma. In academic circles and among health professionals of the Sangoma, however, enjoys a very low reputation.
