Right of way ( Austria: priority, Switzerland: precedence ) is a regulation that determines the order in which a road user is allowed to continue its journey in front of another.

The term right of way is used for crossing traffic on public intersections and junctions. In that encounter each other (§ 6 Highway Code ) or in the same direction flowing traffic in Germany we call of precedence. For the right of way, the way rules apply in Germany according to § 8 Highway Code ( Road Traffic Act ). The intention to respect the right of way of another road user is to signal by a corresponding adjustment of the speed.

Due to the different developments, the concept of right of way in Austria is called a priority and in Switzerland as a priority. In Germany precedence referred to in the Highway Code is a special case of the right of way, the precedence is in Germany, however, only possible on foot.

A main road is marked with numeral 306. The signs must be repeated in Germany at every intersection / junction. The end of a main road is marked with numeral 307. Outside a built-up area () prohibits numeral 306 to park on the main road ( Highway Code § 12 ).

Additional sign under 306 characters can view the history of a right of way at an intersection. The driver must, if he wants to follow the course of the main road, pull the turn signal accordingly ( flash). Pedestrians take special consideration; if necessary, is to wait ( § 9 Highway Code ).

In the GDR, the priority roads have been designated as the main road.
