Trajan's Forum

The Trajan's Forum (Latin: Forum Traiani ) in Rome is the last, largest and most magnificent of the so-called Imperial Forums. It is also the forum in Rome, which is still the best preserved today. On command Kaiser Trajan 107 AD began with the construction and design of the Trajan's Forum, led by the famous architect Apollodorus of Damascus in the year. The entire system in the year 143 AD, was inaugurated finally in a central location in Rome was no place for such a magnificent forum as Trajan presented. He therefore chose the still largely undeveloped section between the Forum of Augustus Caesar and the Forum for the forum. The venue was located on a hill between the Capitol and the Quirinal. Since Trajan in no way wanted to build his forum on a hill, he left the soil of about 35 m high Ostabhangs the Quirinal outwear. For the complex company also has a number of houses that were here leveled.

Based on the adjacent diagram ( map ) you can understand the structure of Trajan's Forum:

  • An imposing triumphal arch which was built in AD 116, was the entrance to the Forum.
  • A way from the Colosseum Coming runs straight through the triumphal arch on the central equestrian statue of Trajan.
  • On the western slope of the excavated Quirinalhügels originated in semi-circular arrangement, the so-called Trajan's Market. Here stores, magazines and the like were housed in numerous, several stories high buildings. Many of the resulting malls was Apollodorus of Damascus even to roof, so that the visitors were protected from the rain. With the numerous incurred thereby courtyards together can be referred to the whole thing almost as an ancient forerunner of today's shopping malls.
  • Very impressive to the visitors of the forum, the five-aisled basilica must have seemed Ulpia. It is believed that the offices of Justice and Education had been housed here.
  • Adjoining the Basilica Ulpia one consisting of two separate buildings library was grown. A part of the building housed the Latin books, the other Greek.
  • Between the two parts of the library was the until today are remained unchanged, - Trajan's Column, erected in praise of the victory in the Dacian wars. It is the up to now the best preserved remnant of Trajan at all.
  • As a conclusion of the Forum, a Trajan was assumed to be more accurate excavations in 2004. The current status suggests, however, that there was residential development at this location.

The Forum of Trajan was - like many other things in Rome also - later largely built over. Many of the buildings or parts of buildings also served as a welcome and cheaper quarry. Good condition is mainly the highly visible Trajan's Column and large parts of the markets. Overall, little has been excavated so far. This is due not least to the fact that the remains of Trajan's Forum are about 5 m below the present street level of the city. The built under Mussolini Via dei Fori Imperiali crosses the Trajan's Forum, like the other two emperors forums also.
