Trakošćan Castle

Trakošćan Castle is located on the territory of the municipality Bednja in Varaždin County in the far north of Croatia, close to the Slovenian border. It is equipped with 40,000 visitors annually one of the most visited castles in the country.

History

Trakošćan was built in the 13th century.

From the year 1584, when the estate gave Maximilian II Juraj Draskovic Trakošćan, until the expropriation after the communist seizure of power, the castle was owned by the noble family Draskovic.

Its present appearance the castle in the 19th century.

Tourism

Today, the Trakošćan castle is owned by the state and is used primarily as a museum and tourist destination. At the foot of the castle there is a lake and a park. The lake was artificially created in the Middle Ages and still valid today. It is rich in fish and other aquatic animals. So the lake was also the meeting place of the fishermen from the immediate but also the region.

As an attraction, there is a pedal boat rentals and a snack Floating Island. Around the lake, a trail is created. A walk around the lake takes about 2-3 hours
