The department Trancas is located in the north of the province of Tucumán in northwestern Argentina, and is one of 17 administrative units in the province. It is bordered to the west and north by the province of Salta, on the east by the department of Burruyacú, to the south by the Departamento Tafi Viejo and to the southeast by the Departamento Tafi del Valle. The department Trancas has an area of ​​2862 km ² with 15,473 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ). The population density was 5.4 inh. / Km ². The capital of the department also named Trancas.

The name comes Trancas, according to legend, by a warrior from the Quilmes which was called Chanca and San Francisco Solano accompanied on his missionary journeys through the North West.
