Trans Maldivian Airways

Trans Maldivian Airways ( TMA ) is a Maldivian airline based in Malé International Airport. It is the oldest existing airline of the Maldives. The home base of the TMA is located at the seaplane terminal on the east side of the Malé International Airport near the dam that connects the two islands Hulhulé and Hulhumalé together.

History

Trans Maldivian Airways was founded in 1989 as a pure Helicopter Helicopter airline with the name Hummingbird Iceland and later renamed Hummingbird Iceland Airways. As of 1997, the first float planes were used. From January 1999 to 2007 Trans Maldivian Airways exclusively offered an aircraft with floats.

For some time operated the airline since August 10, 2007 scheduled flights with the ATR 42 from Male to Gan, the main island of the southernmost atoll Seenu. TMA is thus at the time in the competition for government Maldivian.

On 2 March 2013, the U.S. investment firm Blackstone Group announced the acquisition of majority stakes in the Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian the. Then, the operations of the two airlines merged.
