Transcortin
- OMIM: 122500
- UniProt: P08185
Transcortin ( CBG, of Engl. Corticosteroid binding globulin ) is a plasma protein in mammals, whose task is the binding and transport of glucocorticoids and progesterone in the blood. It belongs to the group of α ₁ - globulins. The production takes place in the liver and is regulated by estrogen.
Transcortin has a high affinity for cortisol, which is believed that it is biologically active only in its shape, not bound to transcortin. Approximately 75 % of cortisol in the circulation is bound to transcortin.
The molecular mass of transcortin has 52000 Dalton, the normal serum concentration is about 37 mg / l, but can double during pregnancy or after taking oral contraceptives. In cirrhosis of the liver, the concentration decreased.
