Transferase
Transferases ( from Latin transferre, carry over ' ) are enzymes of the second class of enzymes according to the systematic nomenclature of enzyme Commission of the International Union of Biochemistry (IUB ) and catalyze the transfer of a functional group X (eg a methyl group or phosphate group ) from a donor A to an acceptor B:
The donor is often a coenzyme.
Nomenclature
Systematically correct names of transferases are formed according to the following pattern: " donor: acceptor Gruppetransferase ". However, other names are common. The usual names of transferases are formed as follows: " acceptor Gruppetransferase " or " donor Gruppetransferase ". For example, a DNA methyltransferase is a transferase that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group to a DNA acceptor.
EC- classification
Transferases in the EC numbers classification system under EC 2 -. -. - Categorized. Transferases can be grouped under nine specific subclasses:
- EC 2.1. -. - Includes enzymes that transfer one- carbon groups
- EC 2.2. -. - Comprises enzymes that transfer aldehyde or ketone groups
- EC 2.3. -. - Includes acyltransferases
- EC 2.4. -. - Includes glycosyltransferases
- EC 2.5. -. - Comprises enzymes, which transfer alkyl or aryl groups,
- EC 2.6. -. - Includes enzymes that transfer the nitro groups
- EC 2.7. -. - Includes enzymes that transfer phosphorus-containing groups ( kinases)
- EC 2.8. -. - Includes enzymes that transfer sulfur-containing groups
- EC 2.9. -. - Includes enzymes that transfer the selenium-containing groups
