Transfiguration Cathedral (Tolyatti)

The Transfiguration Cathedral (Russian Спасо - Преображенский собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city of Togliatti in Russia. Was built the cathedral, which is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord and from 1996 to 2002.

History

Construction of the cathedral was decided during the August coup in 1991. In addition, a baptistery and a bell tower should be built. It was originally planned, the Transfiguration Cathedral on the banks of the Volga, and thus to build on the outskirts of the city. It was decided then but for the location in a residential area.

The construction work began in 1992 with the construction of the baptistery in honor of John the Baptist. The construction of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Cathedral began in 1996 and was completed in 2002. It was consecrated on 19 August 2002 by the archbishop of Samara and Sysran. Builder and financier based in Tolyatti was the car manufacturer AvtoVAZ.

For several years, the cathedral is built on the last part, the bell tower. This is expected to reach a height of 76 meters after its completion.

Architecture

Was designed the Cathedral of the Moscow architects Dmitry Sergeyevich Sokolov in collaboration with three based in Tolyatti companies, including AvtoVAZ.

On a total area of ​​almost 2,800 square meters find about 3000 people. The height to the cross on the central dome is 62 meters. These and the four smaller domes are gilded and covered with stainless steel. The largest weighs 26 tons.

Inside the building there is an altar in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The iconostasis is 15 meters high. The interior lighting is done by 13 chandeliers, the largest of which almost ten meters high.

The soil consists of mosaics, were used for the twelve different kinds of marble. Local jewelers made ​​for the Cathedral 16 icons in silver frame.
