Transfusion medicine

Transfusion medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with blood transfusions.

For Transfusion Medicine include the recovery of stored blood, the maintenance of blood banks and the provision of canning for the respective areas of expertise, especially in surgery, emergency medicine and oncology.

Many transfusion medical institutes maintain their own blood donor centers.

The Specialist in Transfusion Medicine

In order for a completed medical studies in Germany to act as a specialist in transfusion medicine, it requires a five-year training period at a training officer at a training center in accordance with § 5 paragraph 1 sentence 1 of the CPE regulations:

  • 3 years Transfusion Medicine in transfusion services, or transfusion medicine institutes, on this creditable 12 months Laboratory Medicine or
  • 6 months Microbiology ( Virology ) and infectious disease epidemiology.

One year must be completed with a registered doctor.

On 1 January 2001 506 in transfusion medicine were registered, of which 21 were settled. 80 exerted no medical activity.
