Transmetalation

The transmetalation is a chemical reaction that is transmitted in the organic residues of organometallic compounds of a metal of a second. In the strict sense of the term, especially for implementation of organometallics is used with elementary metals, more broadly also for the exchange of the organic remains of two organometallic compounds. Transmetalation takes place usually from noble to the more noble metal.

Reactions

Transmetalation of an organometallic compound of metal M 1 with an elemental metal (M ) to obtain the organometallic compound MR.

In the reaction in terms of a metal exchange reaction of the organic radicals bonded to the metal to be exchanged:

The reaction of an organometallic compound with a metal salt or a complex, which contains a leaving group, in the sense of a metathesis reaction proceeds:

The importance of this reaction in many transition metal -catalyzed cross- couplings. For example, the Sonogashira coupling.
