Transport Layer Interface

The Transport Layer Interface ( TLI ) is in network programming an API that provides application programs, the services of the transport layer. It provides similar functionality as sockets, but is more oriented to the OSI reference model.

TLI was introduced in AT & T UNIX System V Release 3.0 as an alternative to BSD sockets and SVR4 implemented using streams. The XTI X / Open Group is based on the TLI. At that time it was assumed that the OSI protocols TCP / IP would replace.

In fact, experienced neither TLI nor ever XTI such distribution as BSD sockets. Although some operating systems support TLI still, sockets have become the de facto standard in network programming.
