Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 is the first studio album by the supergroup consisting of George Harrison ( † 2001), Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison († 1988), Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. It was on 24 October 1988 ( USA: October 25, 1988) published. In the U.S., the album reached number three in the UK and number 16 in Germany tenth place in the charts.

Genesis

Beginning of April 1988 asked George Harrison's record company by an additional song for the third maxi - single from his album Cloud Nine, This Is Love, as no remix of the single was provided, and you wanted to create a further incentive to buy for the fans, the album that already possessed. Harrison asked in his circle of friends around to see who could make a recording studio available at short notice, and ended on 5 April 1988 in Bob Dylan's studio in Santa Monica ( California). Jeff Lynne, of the title, as I was the album Harrisons produce Roy Orbison brought. Dylan, in turn, called Tom Petty if he wanted to come. The piece, which they recorded, Handle with Care, was on the same day composed, recorded, and named after the inscription on a cardboard box in the garage Dylan.

When Warner was found, the piece was "too good for a B-side" and wanted a full-length album. Since all the record companies, the artist thought this supergroup is a good idea, they decided to record a joint album. In just ten days between 7 and 16 May 1988 Further nine songs were written, arranged and recorded in Dave Stewart Studio. The final work for the album, such as the import of other instruments and blends were made in George Harrison's studio in the summer of 1988.

The main vocals in individual songs has been split to George Harrison sang mainly songs: Handle with Care ( with singing parts of the other Traveling Wilburys ) and Heading for the Light; Bob Dylan: Congratulations, Dirty World, Margarita and Tweeter and the Monkey Man; Tom Petty: Last Night and End of the Line ( with vocal parts by George Harrison and Roy Orbison ); Roy Orbison: Not Alone Any More and Jeff Lynne: Rattled.

In 1989, the Traveling Wilburys were awarded the Grammy for Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal category for your album.

Even before the release of the second single, Roy Orbison died on December 6, 1988 to a heart attack. The video for End of the Line then showed a photo of the singer and repeated a rocking chair with a guitar on it.

Bonus tracks (2007)

Single releases

The first single Handle with Care / Margarita appeared in October 1988 and reached number 45 in the U.S., UK number 12 in the charts in Germany, the single could not place. In the U.S., the single was released as a 7 " vinyl and 3" CD version. Handle with Care (Extended Version) / Margarita as well as a 3 " CD version: Handle with Care / Margarita / Handle with Care (Extended Version ) -" and a 12 " vinyl maxi single in Europe in addition a 10 appeared.

The second single from the album End of the Line / Congratulations was released in February 1989 and reached number 63 in the U.S., UK number 52 in the charts in Germany could not place the single. In the U.S., the single was released as a 7 " vinyl and 3" CD version. In Europe, an additional 3 " CD and a 12" vinyl maxi single was released yet: End of the Line (Extended Version) / Congratulations.

In Germany was released in April 1989 nor the third single from the album Heading for the Light / Rattled, this was also available as a maxi-single in 3 " CD and 12" vinyl format: Heading for the Light / Rattled / Last Night. The single did not place in the charts themselves.

Reissues

First published in CD format was made in October 1988, parallel to the record release without bonus tracks.

The album was re-released in a newly remastered version with two bonus tracks in June 2007 as a CD by Rhino Records.

More information

In January 1989, the CD - doctoral Singles Last Night and Heading for the Light was released in the U.S..

For the album music videos were produced for the title Handle with Care and End of the Line.

The members of the Traveling Wilburys used for the album following pseudonyms:

The two bonus tracks Like a Ship and Maxine both are not derived from the recordings of Traveling Wilburys Vol 1, but by the next album, Traveling Wilburys Vol 3 and have been revised musical in 2007 by Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison.
