Traversay Islands

The Traversayinseln (English: Traversay Islands ) are an archipelago in the sub-Antarctic South Atlantic. To the islands that lie to the north of the South Sandwich Islands are the three uninhabited islands Zavodovski, Leskov and Visokoi.

The Traversayinseln are politically to the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. From South Georgia and with it the main island of the area, the group is about 350 km away.

The archipelago was found in 1819 by the Russian Antarctic expedition under Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, who named it after the French naval officer Marquis de Traversay ( 1754-1831 ). The French King Louis XVI. had de Traversay sent in 1791 on the request of Empress Catherine II in support of the Russian Navy to Saint Petersburg. Marquis de Traversay, 1811-1831 Russian Minister of Marine Affairs, was a major sponsor of the Antarctic voyages of von Bellingshausen.

The islands are all uninhabited - but living on them numerous seabirds and seals.
