Treading Water is a song by British singer-songwriter Alex Clare. It was first published on 27 May 2011 and is Clare's second single, which was also placed in the charts. The song, which the genres of Drum & Bass and Soul can be assigned, appeared in Iceland Records, was written by Jarrad Rogers, Francis White and Alex Clare and produced by Mike Spencer.

In the text it comes to Clare, who sings of a woman he could have possibly rather is but one way to wreck himself. He does not believe to get through it with her, and sings that he would screw up yet again only chance. He explains the whole song, that he could not change.

Music Video

The official music video was first published on YouTube on June 3, 2011, his Vevo channel, six days later on his own.

In the video you can see Alex Clare next to his girlfriend sitting in a car that is in a parking garage. She gets out and runs away while he weitersingt in the car. After the second chorus it starts to rain in the car until the rain at the end of the video has flooded the whole car and the water breaks the doors. The video on YouTube has more than 4.5 million hits, was directed by Sam Pilling and produced by Pulse Films.

Although Treading Water was not as commercially successful as its predecessor, Too Close by far, the track reached # 59 in the German charts. Overall, it was 10 weeks in the top 100

Criticism

The song was consistently positive criticism: The mix1.de editorial awarded seven of eight possible points, while 4.5 out of five stars awarded Adrian Burgess of themusicalview and said that the " bearded brilliance " would get from the fans James Blake's support by bringing the genre to a new dimension with expert precision and composure.
