Treaty of Alexandropol

The non- ratified Treaty of Alexandropol ( Turkish Gümrü Antlaşması ) was a peace treaty between the dissolved on December 30, 1922 Democratic Republic of Armenia and the Turkish National Assembly, which was, now Gyumri signed on December 2, 1920 in the city of Alexandropol. The treaty ended the Turkish-Armenian War. The Republic of Turkey was proclaimed after three years by Mustafa Kemal as the successor of the Ottoman Empire and founded.

It was the first treaty the Turkish movement under Mustafa Kemal with a recognized state. As representatives of the Turkish side was negotiating the General Kâzım Karabekir with Armenian Foreign Minister Alexander Chatissjan. The contract consisted of 18 items. In Article 10, Armenia renounced the Treaty of Sèvres, which provided an Armenian state in eastern Anatolia.

The second article presented the new frontier established between the two countries. The boundary line should run through the lower part of the river Karasu, the macaws, the river APARCAY that Karahan Gorge, and Mount Büyük Akbaba.

History and background

Basically, the border was similar to that which had been agreed in the Treaty of Brest- Litovsk between Soviet Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The Democratic Republic of Armenia had previously rejected the Treaty of Brest- Litovsk. After several conflicts and battles the Armenians accepted in the Treaty of Batumi in 1918 that limit yet. But when the Ottoman Empire was forced by the Entente to make the Treaty of Brest- Litovsk reversed, created a power vacuum. Therein the Southwest Caucasian Republic was founded in Kars. This republic was initially tolerated by the British administration in Batumi but then disbanded in 1919. Thus, the Armenians were able to bring this area under control.

The Treaty of Alexandropol moved the border of the Democratic Republic of Armenia behind the line Ardahan - Kars, saying more than half of the Democratic Republic of Armenia to the Turkish side. The reasons for the military defeat was in the book for the Dascnakzutyun there is nothing more to do by Hovhannes Katchaznouni explained.

The contract should be ratified by the Armenian parliament within a month, but that did not happen, because Armenia was annexed by Soviet Russia. 1921 then this agreement was replaced by the Treaty of Kars.
