Treaty of Madrid (1670)

The Treaty of Madrid was signed in Madrid on July 18, 1670 between England and Spain. In this Agreement, Spain recognized formally to the British sovereignty over Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Jamaica was previously taken in 1655, the Cayman Islands in 1666 by England in possession. The latter were managed and colonized from Jamaica.

In addition to the recognition of English sovereignty over these territories Spain assured also that English ships can move undisturbed in the Caribbean. Both countries also assured the contractor not to get involved in the trade of the occupied Spain or England Caribbean territories.

The treaty marked the end under the previous English- Spanish war.
