Treaty of Windsor (1386)

The Treaty of Windsor was signed on May 9, 1386 between Portugal and England. He renewed under the new dynasty ruling since 1383 Avis closed the 1373 alliance between England and Portugal, who was also later never been terminated and thus represents the oldest still valid diplomatic alliance in Europe.

Both countries gave assurances of inviolable fidelity to life. This " eternal, indestructible " friendship was valuable for the independence of Portugal. King John I of Portugal confirmed this desire by marrying Philippa of Lancaster, sister of the future King Henry IV, on February 2, 1387th

The seed for the alliance was laid in 1275, when both countries allied. They defeated on August 14, 1385 the share of John I ruled the kingdom of Castile in the Battle of Aljubarrota.
