Treaty of Xanten

The Treaty of Xanten on November 12, 1614 brought a temporary and superficial solution for lasting since 1609 Jülich- Kleve Succession dispute between Elector Johann Sigismund of Brandenburg and Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm of Pfalz- Neuburg.

The inheritance was divided by the Mark Brandenburg, the Duchy of Cleves, Mark and the county, the county received Ravens mountain, while the Duchy of Pfalz -Neuburg, the Duchy of Jülich and the Duchy of Berg was awarded.

Since there were different denominational affiliations in areas affected by succession dispute areas, the dispute had called the major European powers on the plan. Thus, the negotiated agreement in Xanten could initially prevent a military conflict between them on the eve of the Thirty Years' War. In addition, the Mark Brandenburg could significantly strengthen the area gain its position in West Germany.
