Tree of Life Web Project

The Tree of Life Web Project ( ToL short ) is an Internet project in order to collect information on biodiversity and phylogeny of all life forms in a distributed database first descriptions.

The original idea came from David Maddison. The project was officially launched on January 5, 1996 and includes mid dwelt parts on several Internet servers worldwide.

The structure and content are contributed and generally monitored by scientists, but there are also a biology teacher and lay people (of whom come many images and other media files) involved.

Structure of the database

The database is structured hierarchically according to the phylogenetic lineage and is displayed as an evolutionary family tree. There is this so-called Branch pages for groups of organisms to display the ties of kinship, and leaf pages for the individual form of life, such as the Art This is the scientific content dar.

In addition, there are educational materials and media collections.

Contents of the database

For each life form a data sheet (Leaf Page ) is applied, which may include one or more of the following:

  • Introduction
  • Description
  • Dissemination
  • Behavior
  • Literature
  • Internet sources

Navigation, Search the Database

In the database, you can walk along the branches browse through the pedigree or enter your own search terms into a search slot and start the search.

Relationship to the Encyclopedia of Life

Relations with the Encyclopedia of Life project: ToL places emphasis on the phylogenetic relationships. Diverging family relationships are presented and proven.
