TreeSize

TreeSize is a software product family that serves the management of disk space (disc usage utilities) and helps clean up and finding space wasters and unnecessary files. TreeSize runs under Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and 7, including the 64- bit versions. There is a freeware and shareware two editions of the software.

With the Windows Explorer, the folder size can not be structured (side by side or in a Tree Map) Show. The most important functionality of TreeSize, which is all editions in common is the determination of folder sizes in a directory branch or drive, connected to different comparative presentation and report functions for the results.

The Professional and Personal Edition also also search for extra-large, unused or unnecessary files such as temporary files or cached files from web browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Opera. In addition, duplicate files can be found using MD5 or SHA256 checksum and also deleted or replaced with hardlinks. TreeSize accesses the scan of local NTFS drives to the master file table and reads the metadata from stored there.

TreeSize also allows the observation of the development of the space usage on hard drives. This is done either with the help of exported XML files, by comparing so-called shadow copies that can be created by the Windows System Restore or manually created.

History

The first version of TreeSize was developed in 1996 by Joachim Marder to overcome the limitations of tools such as the Unix command du ( disk usage ) or the right-click in the then Windows Explorer. The program was planned from the beginning as a GUI -based version of 'you ' for Windows. Since then, there has been steady progress through the company he founded JAM Software and now has the version number 6.0 (October 2013) achieved.

TreeSize Free, currently in version 2.7 available (as of June 2012), is fully free, has the basic functionality for accurate determination of folder sizes, and integrates into the Windows Explorer, and it uses the same code base as the extensive shareware versions.

More versions

The available as shareware Personal Edition includes all the features of TreeSize Professional ( also shareware ), however, does not run on Windows server systems, does not support Windows domains, can not be controlled via command-line parameters and has less export functions.

Since October 2012, a Windows 8 mobile devices designed freeware version name " TreeSize Touch " is available in the Windows Store.
