Tréguier Cathedral

The Basilica of St. Tugdual ( Basilique Saint- Tugdual ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Tréguier in the Breton department of Côtes- d'Armor. The basilica was built mainly in Gothic style in the 14th century was the cathedral of the diocese in 1801 repealed Tréguier and since then belongs to the diocese of Saint- Brieuc. In 1947 she was awarded the rank of a minor basilica.

History

The diocese Tréguier goes back to a monastic foundation of St. Tugdual in the 6th century, whose patronage bears the Basilica and whose relics it preserves. A Romanesque cathedral was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. From her only the tower of the northern Querhausarms (Tour Hasting ) is obtained.

1339, work began on the present Gothic building, with several interruptions - the longest by the Breton War of Succession - lasted until the mid 15th century. 1450-1468 was the notable late Gothic cloister. The south transept tower with its openwork lace was only completed in 1785.

Architecture and Facilities

The Basilica has the shape of a Latin cross. The three-aisled nave consists of seven bays, the ambulatory four. A special feature is the transept, which except a square central tower, the two main towers at the ends - the Romanesque and late Gothic - are added. Three porches on the south transept portal, on the southern side aisle and on the west façade provide access to the church.

The interior is designed with cross-ribbed vaults, clerestory windows, triforium and polygonal columns with half columns submitted bundles.

The Basilica contains, inter alia, the tomb of Duke John V. (VI. ) ( † 1442 ), an elaborate neo-gothic monument over the grave of St. Ivo and the reliquary of the Holy Tugdual and Ivo, the Archbishop Hyacinthe -Louis de Quélen in 19th century donated.

The organ dates back to an instrument that was built in 1831 by Pierre Tuau in the years 1647 to 1649 for the Cistercian Abbey Bégard. The organ was restored several times in the 19th and 20th centuries, and also changed. Today it has 31 stops on three manual and pedal works. The play and Registertrakturen are mechanical.
