Trehalase

Trehalase ( Gen: TREH ) is called the enzyme that degrades trehalose to glucose. Since trehalose is one of the most important reserve materials (except mammals ), the enzyme for its digestion is important. Trehalase occurs in many living things. In humans, it is localized in the small intestine. Trehalasemangel by mutations in TREH gene occurs in particular in Greenland Inuit (10 to 15 percent) and leads to the inability to digest trehalose, which would, inter alia, excessive bloating after meals with mushrooms.

Especially in insects is the main reserve sugar trehalose, and inhibition of trehalase by hypoglycemia can lead to death, what one makes use in insect control.

Trehalase in the urine can indicate poisoning with cadmium and copper, as it is also expressed in the microtubules of the kidneys.
