Tremor (software)

Tremor is a Vorbis audio decoder of the Xiph.Org Foundation. It uses, in contrast to the original implementation libvorbis integers only, which allows the application on different CPU architectures without FPU (e.g., ARM, MIPS, embedded systems, etc.).

The original implementation of libvorbis Vorbis is not suitable for MP3 players and similar portable devices, because to play a co- processor is required for Gleitkommazahlberechnungen, which usually is not available on these devices. Use Traditional hardware MP3 player either a driven with special commands DSP chip or custom chips that can only play MP3 or WMA and Wave. But to be able to still allow playback of Vorbis -encoded music in and develop hardware for Vorbis, purely based on integers decoder for Vorbis was created with tremor.

Originally tremor was offered free of charge, in the hope that manufacturers would have to license the decoder to add their players Vorbis support. After that was not the case as Vorbis still not a great spread, it was decided in September 2002 to be as well as libvorbis release tremor under a BSD - style license, so as to provide hardware support for Vorbis and the popularity of the format increase.
