Trencavel

The Trencavel ( okzitan: trenca Avelana = " Nutcracker"; Provencal: trencar vel = " cutting through " ) were an important noble family of Languedoc in the southwest of present-day France. During the 10th to the 13th century they came to considerable power in the region by making came into the possession of the Vice- counties of Albi, Agde, Nimes, Carcassonne, Béziers and Razès. Bernard Aton IV was the first of the family who has been designated by the name Trencavel.

They stood in rivalry to the Count of Toulouse and recognized the suzerainty of the counts of Barcelona and the Kings of Aragon, which guaranteed them a virtually autonomous position. In the 12th century were the territories of the Trencavel centers of the Cathars and were thus a target of the Albigensian Crusade in 1209, in which the family lost all their possessions. 1240 tried unsuccessfully to regain Carcassonne Raimund II Trencavel.
