Tres (instrument)

The Tres is a Cuban stringed instrument descended from the guitar. She has three choirs ( hence the name: tres means three in Spanish ), originally three, today usually two strings. The Tres is used in Punto Guajiro and the Son as an accompanying instrument.

In more modern varieties such as the salsa it is usually replaced by the piano, which in its montuno mentioned character - not to be confused with the concept of form Montuno - the characteristic accompaniment figure of Tres copied note for note. It comes from the fact that the average string choir, tuned to the root note of a chord, a unison forming the outer choirs with third and fifth are oktavverdoppelt other hand, so that the tone above and below is plays around.

The mood was originally based on a d- minor chord, but a C- major triad has since Arsenio Rodríguez enforced. Also transpositions thereof are cited as a reason mood.

Strings for tuning in C: GG ' (24 /11), C'C ' (14/ 14) and E'E (11 /24). In a mood in D thinner strings are used.

Manufacturer: Many Cuban musicians build normal acoustic or classical guitar at the Tres. The Tres Cubano with the modified body shape and the short scale length is often made by luthiers from Spain.
